Population structure of Laurus nobilis L. in Central Italian forests: evidence for its ongoing expansion

چکیده
Abstract During the last decades, an ongoing spread of broad-leaved evergreen laurophyllous species has been reported for forests Southern Europe. Several factors were suggested as main drivers phenomenon, namely global warming, land-use change, evolutionary history, and increase in atmospheric CO 2 . Among laurophylls, Laurus nobilis L. is considered one most prominent from morphological, evolutionary, ecological point view. We studied population structure Central Italy its natural habitat to investigate regeneration potential expansion along with influence biotic abiotic factors. To define types structures, we collected proportions six growth classes 16 sites. obtained three structure, i.e., (1) stable, (2) dynamic, (3) regressive. The first two are frequent, suggesting a abundance within Italy. regressive type occurs mainly sites heavy ungulate impact. High propagule pressure shaded moist environmental conditions favor regeneration. Accordingly, found evidence recent Italian forests. suggest forest cover age, due abandonment traditional rural practices, key this apparently late-successional laurophyll. In conclusion, that observed stands can therefore be ascribed process recover niche following change.

Hydraulic architecture of leaf venation in Laurus nobilis L
Veins are the main irrigation system of the leaf lamina and an understanding of the hydraulic architecture of the vein networks is essential for understanding leaf function. However, determination of leaf hydraulic parameters is challenging, because for most leaves the vein system is reticulate, contains a hierarchy of different vein sizes, and consists of leaky conduits. We present a new appro...
متن کاملLaurus nobilis: Composition of Essential Oil and Its Biological Activities.
Laurus nobilis is native to the southern Mediterranean region and cultivated mainly in Europe and the USA as an ornamental and medicinal plant. The chemical composition of the essential oil (EO) from leaves of L. nobilis, collected in Southern Italy, was studied by GC and GC-MS. In all, 55 compounds were identified, accounting for 91.6% of the total oil. 1,8-Cineole (31.9%), sabinene (12.2%), a...

BACKGROUND Allamanda cathartica. L. is a perennial shrub used in traditional medicine for treating malaria and jaundice. Laurus nobilis. L. is a tree and has been used for its astringent, healing and diuretic properties. The objective of this study was to investigate the aqueous extracts of Allamanda and Laurus nobilis to evaluate their wound healing activity in rats. METHODS Excision and inc...
متن کاملIn vitro and in vivo effects of Laurus nobilis L. leaf extracts.
The in vitro and in vivo antioxidant activities of different extracts of laurel leaves were studied. Free radical scavenging capacity (RSC) was evaluated measuring the scavenging activity on the DPPH, NO, O(2)(.-) and OH radicals. The effects on lipid peroxidation (LP) were also evaluated. Experimental results indicate that ethyl acetate extract of leaves has exhibited the largest RSC capacity ...
متن کاملEssential oil composition of Laurus nobilis L. of different growth stages growing in Iran.
The chemical variations of the essential oil from the aerial parts of Laurus nobilis L. (Lauraceae) have been studied. Plant material has been harvested at each phenological status (vegetative, before anthesis, full flowering and seed-bearing). The oils were obtained by hydrodistillation of the air-dried samples. Analysis by GC and GC-MS of the essential oils has allowed to identify 39 compound...
